NC Space Grant 2007-08 Funding Opportunities for Students - APPLICATION
DEADLINES FAST APPROACHING
Each year NC Space Grant awards graduate student fellowships and
undergraduate student scholarships to students attending its member
institutions. Each of these programs is focused on students who are
pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Graduate Research Fellowship Program - APPLICATIONS DUE FEBRUARY 16, 2007

Eligibility: Graduate students (during 2007-08 academic year)
Applications for the NC Space Grant Graduate Student Research Fellowship
Program are now open. Each year NC Space Grant awards graduate student
research fellowships to students attending its member institutions who are
pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics
(STEM). This competitively awarded program engages the future STEM workforce
in hand-on, aero/space-related, research projects and facilitates the
development of mentor relationships between students, faculty and the NASA
community.
Applications are evaluated based upon the student's academic achievement,
quality of proposed research project, letter of recommendation from their
research mentor, and exhibited leadership qualities. Applicants may carry
out their research project at their home institution (award up to $5,000) or
at a NASA center or industrial contractor (award up to $7,000). All research
projects must be conducted under the general supervision of the applicant's
research mentor.
J. Donald Cline Astronomy Scholarship - APPLICATIONS DUE FEBRUARY 9, 2007

Award: Academic support for Junior and Senior years of academic study
totaling $10,000; summer research support up to $5,000
Eligibility: Open to current 2006-2007 undergraduate students who will be of
junior standing during the 2007-08 academic year, are enrolled in a degree
program in the astronomical or related sciences at one of the NC Space Grant
eleven member institutions, and have a minimum 3.0 GPA
In order to meet the increasing demand for a highly-skilled aero/space
workforce, the NC Space Grant / J. Donald Cline Astronomy Scholarship was
established in 2007 to provide two year support for an undergraduate student
pursuing a degree in the astronomical or related sciences at a NC Space
Grant member university. Examples of related degrees include programs that
study, but are not limited to, optical and radio astronomy, instrumentation
engineering, robotics, data imaging and visualization. The scholarship will
also give the student an opportunity to engage in hands-on research at the
Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI) in western North Carolina.
Applicants will be screened and interviewed by a review committee. The
review committee will examine a number of criteria including academic
achievement and honors, essay content, extracurricular activities, and
references.

scholarships to students attending its member institutions who are pursuing

end of the academic year scholarship recipients submit a final report
detailing the aero/space-related research and education that is conducted on
their campus. Applications are evaluated based upon the student's academic
achievement, letter of recommendation, and exhibited leadership qualities.
Undergraduate Community College Transfer Scholarship Program - APPLICATIONS
DUE FEBRUARY 16, 2007

Award: $2,000
Eligibility: Students currently enrolled in a community college transfer
program and will be attending a NC Space Grant institution during the
2007-08 academic year.
Applications for the NC Space Grant Undergraduate Community College Transfer
Scholarship Program are now open. NC Space Grant will award $2,000
undergraduate scholarships to students attending its member institutions who
are pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics
(STEM). At the end of the academic year scholarship recipients submit a
final report detailing the aero/space-related research and education that is
conducted on their campus.
Applications are open to students who are currently enrolled as a full time
student in a junior or community college institution during the 2006-07
academic year, and are planning to attend one of the NC Space Grant member
institutions during the 2007-08 academic year. Applications are evaluated
based upon the student's academic achievement, letter of recommendation, and
exhibited leadership qualities.
